Tongs gripped the elements

in air

Alkali metals

Alkaline earths

My teacher pulled some out of oil

He said barium

burns ‘apple green’

He showed us lithium’s red flame,

sodium yellow

and the fire

The fire of white - brilliant -

when magnesium

erupted. Wow!

I had to understand the white

I had to study

the chemistry
